Brown Plans Town Hall on Actions to Help Save the Great Lakes

National Wildlife Federation to present information for hunters, anglers, others

PORT AUSTIN - State Representative Terry Brown (D-Pigeon) will hold a town hall meeting on Monday, June 30, in Port Austin to present the latest information on how climate change is affecting the Great Lakes and surrounding habitats, and actions we all can take to help prevent further damage to this precious resource.

"We all know that whatever the cause, the Great Lakes are undergoing many changes that put our wildlife and our way of life at risk," Brown said. "As we keep working to strengthen our laws and obtain the resources needed to restore and protect the Great Lakes, the most powerful tool we have is our own ability to take action. As good stewards of our land and water, Thumb residents are interested in doing everything they can to take care of our natural resources. This meeting will provide the information to understand what needs to be done and, more importantly, the steps we all can take to make it happen."

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 30, at the Port Austin Civic Center, on the corner of Spring and Lake streets. The main guest speaker at the meeting will be Kelli Alfano-Yaroch, a Huron County native and outreach consultant for the National Wildlife Federation in Ann Arbor. She will present the latest information on changes in the Great Lakes region, such as low lake levels, invasive aquatic species and vegetation, and changing migratory patterns.

While the free informational meeting is aimed at hunters, anglers, and other outdoors enthusiasts, everyone is welcome.

The National Wildlife Federation works with organizations such as the Michigan United Conservation Clubs and hunters and anglers around Michigan to gather information on water and wildlife issues and form personal and policy solutions to the challenges they involve.
