House Transportation Committee hears opinions of locals, nonprofits
LANSING — State Representative Terry Brown (D-Pigeon) testified in the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on Tuesday on his bill, House Bill 4916, which would allow charitable organizations to solicit donations in public rights of way. The bill was first proposed to Brown by the Sebewaing City Council after it became aware of provisions prohibiting such actions to occur.
“Selling flowers and candies to drivers on public rights of way is a major revenue source for Michigan charities,” Brown said. “I am extremely happy that individuals from these valuable organizations could come give their voice and support to the bill.”
Brown was joined by Douglas Deming of the Sebewaing Chamber of Commerce and Sebewaing Lions, and Michael McGee representing the Sebewaing Lions, Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post #293, who both spoke in favor of the bill.
Deming said of his experience in the committee, “It’s great to see action on a bill that would allow us to resume one of our biggest sources of charitable income. I applaud the efforts of Representative Brown for taking the lead after our local charities were advised against such activities.”
If voted out of committee, the bill will head to the full House of Representatives for a vote before being transferred to the Senate.
