House, Senate unanimously approve Nathan Bower Act
LANSING — State Representative Terry Brown (D-Pigeon) expressed his sincere thanks to his colleagues in the Legislature for allowing the full passage of House Bill 5438. A Senate committee amended the bill to call it the Nathan Bower Act, which means the bill had to go back to the House to agree to the change. House leaders suspended the rules so that the bill could receive a vote before legislators are in recess until November.
“This is a great day for Nathan’s family, who was present to watch the bill get unanimous approval in the Senate,” Brown said. “I look forward to the governor signing the bill so that Nathan’s memory can continue to live on through his place in our laws and our hearts.”
HB 5438 provides for increased focus on bike and motorcycle awareness in driver education classes. Lisa Cook-Gordon, of Melvin, suggested the bill idea to Brown after a young friend, Nathan Bower, died in a motorcycle accident in 2009. The bill, which has bipartisan support from 89 co-sponsors, now goes to the governor’s desk for his signature.
